Skills to make you stand out
Understand what key skills will impress your interviewer and how you can demonstrate these
If you're a school leaver about to enter the job market, it can feel a bit overwhelming. But don't worry, we're here to help you understand what we're looking for and how you can showcase your valuable skills. We've listed below six key skills that you should highlight throughout your application and during the interview stage with us at PKF Smith Cooper:
Communication
Think about a time when you had to give a presentation or communicated effectively. Have you ever led any group projects where you had to actively communicate with colleagues? Have you worked in a public-facing role previously? Use these experiences to provide a strong example of your communication skills.
Teamwork
Reflect on a time when you worked as part of a group project. How did you contribute to the project? How did you work with others with different skill sets to achieve a common goal? Showcasing your ability to collaborate effectively is crucial.
Problem solving
Think about a time when you actively solved an issue or resolved a conflict. This could be in a workplace setting, such as dealing with difficult customers or colleagues, or managing multiple tasks at once. Explain how you overcame these challenges and what plans you had in place.
Work ethic
Provide evidence of your work ethic by discussing a time when you met deadlines or worked on a project. Have you consistently met deadlines? How do you ensure you do so every time? Highlight your reliability and dedication.
Adaptability
Showcase your adaptability by discussing a time when you had to learn a new skill or adapt to a change in your workplace or school. What issues did you face, and how did you overcome them? Describe your approach to new situations and environments.
Technical Skills
Think about specific software or tools you use in your workplace. Do you stay organised through technology? Are you up-to-date with the latest tools? If you lack a strong technology background, are you a keen and quick learner? Highlight your technical proficiency or your eagerness to learn.
To showcase these skills throughout your application process, use action words like ‘led,’ ‘created,’ and ‘managed’ to help you stand out from the crowd. Highlight these skills throughout your application, and be prepared to discuss specific examples during the interview stage.
Our advice to you:
- Practice common interview questions ahead of time to ensure you have concrete examples to use.
- Remember, enhancing your employability is an ongoing process. Keep seeking new experiences and building on your existing skills.
- Stay positive. You have a lot to offer, and with the right approach, you'll stand out from the crowd in no time.
